Is Biotin For Hair Worth It?

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, has the ability to stimulate keratin production in hair, increasing the rate of follicular growth. This substance is not stored in the body for long, and in order for it to be effective, it needs to be consumed. Keratin is a basic protein that makes up your hair, skin, and nails. It’s clear that biotin improves your body’s keratin infrastructure. Even so, researchers aren’t really sure what biotin’s role in hair or skincare is. So, is biotin for hair really worth it?

What the Research Says

As it is not stored in the body for long, this can prove to br an issue. Most of it is consumed via the foods we eat, such as organ meats, egg yolk, bananas, cauliflower, mushrooms, whole grains, and more. According to a 2017 review in the journal Skin Appendage Disorders, there is little conclusive evidence that biotin reduces hair loss. Even so, it still remains a popular supplement for hair, skin, and nail growth. Legitimate research on the effects biotin has in regard to hair growth is very sparse. Up to now, there’s only limited evidence to suggest that increased biotin intake may help promote hair growth.

Often, biotin is added to shampoos that claim to reduce hair loss. This is not the case as there is no evidence that this works. The only way that it has been proven to absorb biotin into the body is through the consumption of foods rich in healthy vitamins and minerals. This will help with overall hair health bhut there is no evidence that this helps with hair loss itself. 

How to Avoid Hair Loss

Some evidence suggests that stronger hair is less likely to fall out. Therefore, strengthening it is the best measure you can take in the avoidance of hair loss. Adults should consume around 30 mcg/day, and women who are breastfeeding should increase their intake to 35 mcg/day with physician support and guidance. Other ways to avoid hair loss is not only by eating biotin, but also foods containing adequate levels of vitamin E, along with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids through foods like fish, walnuts, and chia seeds.

Causes of hair loss are not isolated to one factor, and can often be a combination of genetics, certain medications you are taking, and underlying conditions like depression and stress that accentuate hair loss.
