4 Simple Yard Maintenance Tips for the Spring

Your yard is looking drab, brown, and crunchy now that the snow has finally melted. Snowmen have been replaced with weeds and dry dirt!

You need to take care of some serious yard maintenance before summer rolls around! After all, you want your lawn to be the envy of the neighborhood, right?

But what should you be doing to get your yard back in tip-top condition? We’re here to talk about it. Read on for a few lawn care tips for this spring.

  1. Aerate Your Lawn

When was the last time that you aerated your lawn?

When you mow or walk on your lawn, you compress the dirt underneath the grass. This compression makes it difficult for grass to grow strong and healthy, stops water from absorbing, and prevents important microorganisms from thriving. This will result in a brittle and brown lawn.

Punch three-inch deep holes into your lawn in early spring to aerate it. You’ll loosen up the dirt and free up room for your grass to thrive.

  1. Fertilize the Right Way

If you want a healthy and lush lawn during the warmer months, start fertilizing it now.

Make sure that you have warm-weather grass before you fertilize in spring. If not, you may want to wait until the end of the season.

Choose natural fertilizers over synthetic ones. Not only are they more affordable and more effective, but they’re also better for the environment and any local wildlife, as well as your pets and children if they play on the grass.

When you mow your lawn, leave your lawn clippings behind to act as a natural (and free) fertilizer. You can also start a compost bin to make your own nutrient-dense plant food at home.

  1. Mow High

Resist the urge to have a short and perfectly manicured lawn. While it might look neat and tidy, it’s not the best choice for the overall health of your grass.

Depending on your type of grass, you’ll want to keep it anywhere between two and four inches. This will make it more resistant to heat and dry conditions, so it’s ready for the dry summer months.

  1. Hire a Professional Lawn Care Service

Taking care of a lawn is a lot of work. If you’re already busy with other responsibilities, you might not have enough time to devote to lawn maintenance. Why not hire a landscaping company to help?

Professional landscapers can turn your lawn from dry and brittle to lush and green. They have all of the necessary tools to keep your lawn watered, fertilized, and healthy.

Contact a pro like Heartland Turf & Landscape for lawn care services.
