3 Tips For Sticking To A Health Plan When You’re Sick

If you have good intentions to get healthy and have a strong diet and exercise plan to help you reach your goals, getting sick can feel like a big setback. Especially if you’re not feeling your best, sticking to a strict health plan can be a real challenge. But luckily, there are things that you can do to reasonably stick to your plan without losing all of your progress.

To help you see how this can be done, here are three tips for sticking to a health plan when you’re sick.

Know When Exercise Is Safe

If you’ve struggled to get into a good habit with your exercise, taking a few days off can be scary if you’re worried that you’ll have a hard time getting back into this habit. But in many cases, being sick doesn’t mean that you can’t continue to move your body and get some exercise.

As a good rule of thumb, if your sickness hasn’t moved into your chest and doesn’t include a fever, you’re usually safe to continue exercising. But if you have had a fever, you won’t want to do anything that heats you up too much or puts too much stress on your system. Additionally, if you have a sickness that’s moving into your lower respiratory system, breathing well during exercise can be a challenge, so you’ll want to avoid working out too hard.

Choose Something Low Intensity

When you’re sick but you still feel up to getting a bit of physical activity in for your health plan, you should try to do something that’s lower intensity than you might normally do when you’re exercising.

To find something that’s lower intensity, think about what you normally do for exercise and then take it down a notch or two. If you normally run, try walking. If you like to do circuits, try just doing some yoga or basic stretching. This way, you can get your body moving without putting too much stress on your body as it’s trying to heal from your sickness.

Eat What Sounds Good

While you might normally have a diet that you try to stick to now, when you’re not feeling well, you should try to trust your body when it tells you what sounds good for you to eat.

In many cases, this might be food that’s higher in carbs than what you might be trying to eat. But when your body is needing energy to fight off whatever illness you’re facing, it’s best to feed it a bit more and be ready to hit it hard again once you’re feeling 100 percent.

If you’re worried about sticking closely to your health plan while you’re sick, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you figure out how to best manage this.
