One reason you’ll want to eliminate mosquitoes from your home is that they are very good at carrying and passing on diseases. They can transmit a wide variety of diseases but the following three are potentially the worst.

1. West Nile Virus

Despite the name, the West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in the USA. If the mosquito that bites you is carrying it, one bite can be enough to pass the virus on.

Unfortunately, there are currently no vaccines to prevent the contraction of this disease. No medication has proved to be effective against the condition.

In most cases, the disease causes fever, loss of appetite, headaches, and a variety of other symptoms. Approximately 1 case in every 150 is more serious and can be fatal.

2. Malaria

You’ve probably heard of malaria, it is another disease that can be fatal. However, in the case of malaria, it is possible to get a vaccination that protects you from the disease. Unfortunately, vaccinations are usually given when you’re about to go on vacation to specific destinations. They are not normally given to residents.

Symptoms of malaria include fever, sickness, nausea, headaches, and fatigue. In severe cases your skin will start to yellow, you may experience seizures and even die.

The good news is medication is available to help you overcome this potentially fatal disease.

3. Zika

The Zika virus is becoming more prevalent and is a particular risk to pregnant women. This is because the disease can be passed from the mother to the unborn baby. There is currently no vaccine for the Zika virus and no effective medication.

The virus gives you red eyes, fever, headaches, muscle and joint pain, and a rash; usually on the chest. The symptoms will often last for several weeks, making it difficult to continue your normal life.

It’s rare for this disease to make you ill enough to need hospital care and it’s extremely rare for anyone to die from it. However, it is possible.

Taking Precautions

The key to preventing mosquito-borne diseases is to keep your skin covered, use mosquito repellant, and use mosquito nets on doors and windows.

It’s also important to avoid having standing water near your home, this attracts mosquitoes as they lay their eggs in standing water.

By taking sensible precautions you can reduce the likelihood of being bitten. However, if you are bitten watch the area and your symptoms. If you start to display any of the above you’ll need to see your doctor.
