Skin Needling Treatments, Overview and Benefits

You may have heard of skin needling or dermarolling as being the next big thing, and if you haven’t, here is your chance to learn. Skin needling is an alternative to laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, or chemical peel that uses a handheld roller device with disposable needles to treat skin conditions such as dead skin cells, acne scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, and wrinkles.

What is skin needling?

If you want to look skinnier, say goodbye to the body contouring creams, wraps, and massages. A new non-invasive procedure that promises to make you look slimmer without dieting is at your fingertips. Called skin needling, it was developed by a dermatologist at the University of Pennsylvania.

There has been quite a buzz lately around Skin Needling in Melbourne or microneedling as it is commonly referred to. Numerous patients who have tried this novel treatment option have spoken highly of their results. What is Skin Needling Treatment? In the case of skin needling, the tiny holes that are made on the skin are as deep as in the tattooing process but much smaller in diameter. The round-shaped pin-like microneedles that are used in skin needling procedures are about 0.5 to 2 mm long.

The procedure

The procedure will begin with the use of a fragile needle, approximately the thickness of a hair. As this needle is pushed into the skin, it is slightly lifted off the skin, thereby pulling the two sides of the dermis apart and making way for safe passage of individual hair shafts. The local anesthetic will numb the area that was just needled, and this small section is typically left untreated until approximately one week later.

The use of a rolling machine that employs the use of needles to puncture the skin, a process known as derma rolling, has been gaining more and more traction over the years. Initially created by a French doctor named Marcel Sobel, this treatment technique was developed to break apart any scars that had formed over acne lesions. The idea was that breaking up these scar tissues would allow the body to remodel itself without forming new scars.

Benefits

Skin needling is a skin-rejuvenation procedure in which tiny needles are passed quickly over the skin to stimulate collagen production. The procedure also stimulates fibroblast, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, and cell turnover so that the dead cells of the skin can be peeled off faster. Compared to dermal fillers, this can provide dramatic improvement while filling up deep wrinkles. Additionally, it helps reduce signs of aging by promoting healthy cell growth while minimizing new fine lines from forming.

Skin needling is a form of skin surgery that is meant to improve the skins tone, texture and appearance. Skin needling falls under the category of the non-ablative fractional resurfacing procedure. There are many different types and brands of skin needling kits. Skin needling has several benefits as well as some possible side effects that you should be aware of.
