Checklist for Your Bathroom Renovation

Who spends more time in the bathroom, men or women? It might surprise you to know that men spend more time in the bathroom than women.

But women (in general) spend more time on their hair and makeup and all that jazz!

Yes, but men need to feel like kings on a throne somewhere…

If your throneroom could use a bit of freshening up, it might be time for a bathroom renovation. But where should you start? Right here with this checklist!

Choose Your Bathroom Renovation Specialists

Unlike slapping on a couple of coats of paint to freshen your bathroom, a renovation requires people with construction skills. You might even be moving walls around and changing up the location of water spouts (you’ll need a plumber) and lights (electrician please!).

Which experts you choose will have a huge impact on the final product. That’s why it’s important to choose your Adelaide Bathroom Renovation Specialists carefully.

Design Your New Bathroom

You might already have a basic idea in mind for how you want your bathroom to look when everything is finished. However, now is the time to put it down on paper.

Work closely with your contractor as they can advise you what is and is not possible from a construction standpoint. If you get stuck on the design, don’t worry! The right contractor will have a design team that can help you realize your vision even if you don’t quite know how to explain it or put it on paper.

Get Your Permits

In most areas, if you will be making structural changes such as moving walls, you’ll have to get a building permit. Minor changes, such as redoing the tile or freshening up the paint on the walls generally doesn’t require a permit.

However, the rules vary depending on where you live so always be sure to double-check. Your contractor should also know whether you’ll need a permit for the type of renovation you want to do.

Tear It Apart

Now it’s time to tear out everything you don’t need. Remember, this is a deep renovation, not just a quick remodel. You’re getting a completely new bathroom once the dust settles on this project!

Plumbing and Electrical

If you’ll be moving fixtures such as the tub or toilet, you will need a plumber to reroute the pipes to the new location. If you want to move lights around, you’ll also need an electrician.

Close Up the Walls

After the plumbing and wiring are rerouted, it’s time to plasterboard the walls and waterproof the bathroom.

Install Cabinetry and Fixtures

The next step is to install your new cabinets and bathroom fixtures. The plumber and electrician will come back at this point to connect all the fixtures and ensure everything is in compliance with regulations.

Finishing Touches

At this point, the bulk of the work is done. You just need to add finishing touches such as mirrors, shower screens, and other small tidbits.

Now you get to enjoy your gorgeous, brand-new bathroom!
