Medieval Time (500-1500)

During the Medieval time period, dresses became longer and fuller for women. More fabrics were being used which meant more money being spent. It was also during this time that a woman’s wardrobe consisted of a chemise, a kirtle, and a surcoat. The chemise was usually made of linen and served as an undergarment. The kirtle was a dress that reached from the neck to the feet and also served as an undergarment.

The surcoat was like a coat or cloak worn over the kirtle or chemise, which is usually made of wool, fur, velvet, satin, or brocade. They were usually brightly colored and decorated with embroidery. Then came the corset during this time which was used to make women’s waists look smaller!

Victorian Times (1837-1901)

During Victorian Times women wore their skirts long because there wasn’t any time for anyone to see her ankles! There were two types of skirts: one would be a hoop skirt which was full and gathered at the top, and the other would be a train. Women also wore many layers underneath their dresses to keep them warm during this time period.

Colors were pastel-like with pale pinks, blues, mauves, yellows, and white. Skirts became more voluminous than they had been before. This is when corsets came into play because women wanted extremely small waists like the ones in the Victorian times! However, some people began to criticize how skinny women were getting so there ended up being laws placed against it by some states!

Summer Time (1950s)

During summertime in the 1950s, women wore knee-length skirts with a lot of petticoats underneath. They also wore cute sundresses and heels. There were no pants back in the 1950s because it was considered too masculine to wear them!
