4 Pros and Cons of Having a Big Yard
Owning a home with a big yard is one of those dreams that many people have. Yet, while the idea of having a huge yard may seem fantastic for enjoying outdoor activities and gardening, there’s a lot of work that goes into it.
After all, with great space comes an enormous amount of responsibility. And while there’s a lot of responsibility involved, there’s also a lot of fun to be had. Before you decide whether you want a big yard or not, it’s important to weigh out the pros and cons. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of having a big yard.
Pro: Plenty of Room For Activities
One of the first pros is that you have plenty of room for doing outdoor activities. Whether you want to set up a volleyball court or install a pool, a big yard means you have plenty of space to do whatever it is you want to do. Another activity that many people enjoy in their large yards is hosting barbecues. If you love hosting and doing things in your space without having to rent a public space, then having a big yard is a huge perk.
Con: Lots of Upkeep
A big yard means you have a lot of work to do to maintain it. From mowing the lawn to raking up leaves to watering it all, this is a huge job that may even require hiring someone else to do it. Remember, maintaining a lush lawn means all sorts of sprinklers and hoses which can lead to a significantly large utility bill. You also have to consider things like outdoor lighting and heating for your pool which can add up on your electric bill as well.
Pro: Privacy
A big yard can make you feel like you have much greater privacy. This is especially true if you have a lot of trees and fences. You can create these little secluded areas where you can relax without having to worry about neighbors seeing you or passersby peeking through. The level of privacy you can gain from having a big yard is incredibly appreciated by many homeowners, which makes it a perk when looking for a home.
Con: Time-Consuming
Initially, we think of all the things we can do with our backyard, from hosting to relaxing to enjoying gardening. However, all these things require a lot of effort and time, which can actually detract from your overall goal which is enjoying your yard. Having a big yard can ironically leave you with much less time to actually enjoy it. If you have a busy family life and work life, then you might find that ultimately your yard becomes more of a job than a source of enjoyment.
